Rangers defender Calvin Bassey remains on the radar of West Ham United, according to Football Insider.
The lowdown
In early 2020, while he was still at Leicester City, the Hammers reportedly made an unsuccessful bid for Bassey. The Nigerian ultimately joined Rangers in July of that year on a free transfer, having reached the end of his contract at the King Power Stadium.
He has gone on to make 43 appearances for the Glasgow club and helped them win the Premiership last season. The 22-year-old has just under two-and-a-half years left on his contract at Ibrox and is valued at £900,000 by Transfermarkt.
The latest
A West Ham source has told Football Insider that Bassey is under consideration as the east Londoners look to recruit a left-footed defender in the summer.
They had wanted to bring in a player of that profile last month, but saw ‘multiple bids’ knocked back in that pursuit.
The verdict
This news comes with Bassey’s stock at an all-time high. Having started only three times in the Premiership last season, and four times in the first four months of the current campaign, he has now been selected for 15 consecutive matches.
The 22-year-old has split his appearances between centre-back and left-back, making him an even more valuable part of the squad. The ‘phenomenal’ Nigerian also possesses ‘explosive pace’, in the words of his former coach Steve Beaglehole.
Losing him just months after another young full-back in Nathan Patterson was lured to the Premier League would be a hammer blow for Rangers, for whom only four men have played more top-flight minutes this season than the West Ham transfer target.
In other news, Jordan Campbell has named three players who are set to leave Ibrox
